AILA WA Award of Excellence for Place Value Ashfield

We’re so excited to share that, alongside Daniel Jan Martin, we were acknowledged with an AILA WA Award of Excellence for Research, Policy and Communication for our project, Place Value Ashfield. It means a lot to us to be recognised by our peers in this way.

Of the project, the awards jury said that, “Typically, medium density housing and associated landscape are designed on a site-by-site basis, with little if any attention to how the development contributes to the place identity and character of the wider neighbourhood. The research turns this approach on its head by advocating for a landscape-centred approach with the landscape architect taking a central role in the revitalisation and redevelopment of Perth’s infill areas.

The jury was impressed by the potential for this research to lead to better coordination and collaboration between landscape architects, developers, planners and architects in the delivery of great urban neighbourhoods of distinctive local landscape and place character.”

A big thank you and congratulations to project supporters Future West (Australian Urbanism) and the UWA School of Design.

This award belongs to everyone who was involved over 12 months of design, conversation and collaboration. Design and developer teams developed six schemes that considered infill housing for Ashfield, in response to our landscape coordination team’s suburb-wide landscape strategy.

Each team was led by staff from the UWA School of Design with representatives from Hassell, SMAR, With_Architecture Studio, Gary Marinko Architects, Mt Eyk, MDC Architects, Kura Studio, NMBW Architecture Studio, WOHA, OP Properties, Yolk Property Group, Golestani Development, LWP Property Group, Codev and Sirona Capital.

Throughout the process, many stakeholders and community members contributed their time and thoughts to ensure that this project was grounded in place and reality - representatives from the Town of Bassendean, Design Basso, Ashfield Community Action Network, UDIA WA, DPLH, and the Department of Communities. Thanks to you all for your contributions.
